Kosrae unfortunately does not have any hostels or camping grounds as of yet. The next best step is staying at a home stay. It is a chance for visitors to interact with local families and create avenues to social events, and experience the culture first hand. This has been in existence since 1999, with the local interest in hosting temporary visitors to Kosrae increasing. Most rooms have a bed or a foam mat that is actually quite comfortable. If you prefer a standard bed, please let us know. We can usually accommodate to any volume with advance notice. If you stay about a week or so, you’d be considered like family and get a Kosraean style farewell dinner.
One must have an onward/roundtrip ticket with departure date reserved. One must be old enough to take care of themselves. One must not drink excessive alcohol. No smoking in the house. No illegal drugs. During your stay, it’s a polite gesture to contribute groceries/dinner once or twice. You can either buy something of your preference or make a dish that is not usual in Kosrae, or canned meat, rice, turkey tails etc, which their normal diet consists of. A home stay is usually between $20 –30 a night, and payments should be made discreetly as Kosraeans may be embarrassed to charge you, especially after you have gained their friendship. Families vary in numbers, but 8 is the average per household, usually with little kids running around. It’s a good idea to let The Kosrae Visitors Bureau know (at least one week in advance) of when you would like to stay, so that you have a host family prior to your arrival and can direct yourself. In some cases the host will volunteer to pick you up.
