Kosrae is sometimes called the Island of the “Sleeping Lady” because the profile of the island looks like the figure of a reclining woman. Legend tells that Kosrae was shaped by the ancient gods. The view of the “sleeping lady” can best be seen from the small islands of Lelu on the eastern side, an island that was once the capital of Kosrae.
Part of Kosrae’s distinctive mountain skyline is an outline of the profile of a woman lying on her back.
One can see the head with part of the hair spreading behind and the breast and body extended to the southeast.
Here is a postal stamp of the “Sleeping Lady Mountain” produced in 1984 by the FSM Postal Services.
If you look south across Lelu harbor toward Tofol you'll see the rugged ridgeline of the mountain range that forms the profile of the "sleeping lady"
According to legend the gods were angry with a woman so they laid her in the sea in a sleeping position and turned her into the island of Kosrae. The story goes she was menstruating at the time which accounts for the rich red soil found in the jungle at the place which would be between her thighs.
